Distorted sound only through Roku Media Player and PlayOn

Netflix, Hulu, etc. are all OK.  ONLY Roku Media Player and PlayOn have this issue.  I have several MP4 videos stored on my network, and they have played ok on Roku Media Player in the past.  Recently, an issue with Roku Media Player has come up where the video plays ok, but the sound crackles loudly for a split second every 15-30 seconds - not always in the same place.  I was prompted to install the PlayOn server on my laptop, and the Roku PlayOn app.  Playing the same video back on PlayOn, the video plays ok, but the sound cuts out for a split second every 30-60 seconds - again, not always in the same place.  I primarily use the Roku Premiere in the home theatre, but have the exact same issue with a Roku Express in the bedroom.  Is anyone else having this issue, or (hopefully) found a solution?

I have experienced 'pops' and 'clicks' using Roku Media Player on files that have AAC audio streams. These were all 'phantom' sounds not present in the file, and converting them to AC3 fixed the issue with no subsequent pops and clicks. The pops happened at the same spot for me. This didn't use to happen, but just over the past, say, 4-6 months (I can't remember when it started). It still does it on my Roku Ultra devices and has not been resolved.
