Recently have been getting into 4K files, however; I have noticed that they are not being allowed to direct play from server but instead get transcoded down to 1080p due to the fact that the Roku device will not direct play files with AAC. WTH! Is there a way around this other than finding non-AAC files? Maybe it is time to be done with Roku. My model is 4630x (Roku Premiere+) and software is 10.5.0 Build 4201-29.
Help!
I don't think anything other than stereo AAC tracks are supported. Could that be the problem? @atc98092 may be able to help.
Here's the quote from a Roku media playback support page:
Roku devices do not support AAC pass-through. Instead, Stereo AAC is transcoded to PCM stereo.
Roku TVs and some Roku players decode 5.1 AAC to PCM stereo for headphone, internal speaker, and HDMI/ S/PDIF (optical) output. However, Roku devices that support Dolby Audio decode connected via HDMI or S/PDIF (optical) to an A/V receiver that also supports Dolby Audio, will convert the audio to Dolby Digital 5.1.

That last bit about "some Roku players" only applies to the Ultra 4640 and 4800, to the best of my knowledge. Those two players and Roku TVs are the only devices I know of with a Dolby encoder.
If you want a player that will bitstream the audio used on UHD disc rips (Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio), you need the Nvidia Shield. I don't know of any other streaming player that will do that.
Hello all-
For the past couple months my Ultras won’t connect to my server. The update rollback didn’t fix the issue. I’ve tried uninstalling, restart, reinstalling with no success.
Everything is on wired network. My other devices (Roku stick and TCL Roku tvs) have no issues. Just the Ultras.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
