Roku setup

I used to be an advanced geek- could grasp new ideas. Seems I'm getting old or whatever. Anyway I just don't grasp mirroring. I have a new Roku Ultra LT. It works great. Love it. I only recently heard about this mirroring feature. I'd like to mirror some videos on a web site on my Dell XPS desktop via an Ethernet cable over my home network to my TV by means of a Google web browser- which I've been told is the only browser that can do it. So, I have the Roku turned on- go to the web site - then choose "mirror" in the upper right of the Google browser window- and it does see the Roku- but nothing shows up on the TV. The Dell XPS is from 2014 but it was a top of the line desktop at the time with the best of everything. Despite my former geek hood, I just can't seem to figure this out. I have read some of the other mirror questions and comments on this blog but just can't see what to do next.

First:  You need to make sure your Windows 10 PC meets Miracast standards (in order to screen mirror) - if it doesnt have a wireless adapter of any kind, it wont be Miracast-compatible.  The wireless/video adapter also have to be Miracast compatible/certified - this can be checked with DXDIAG and checking the Miracast= line.

Roku's support Miracast and AirPlay2 for mirroring (remote display), and DIAL, AirPlay2, and Play on Roku for casting (remote control).

Windows/Android/etc support Miracast (mirroring) and DIAL (casting).

Windows 10 has built-in Miracast screen mirroring support.

Google Chrome supports GoogleCast and DIAL.

MS Edge supports GoogleCast and Miracast and DIAL, depending.

Rokus do not support GoogleCast (Chromecast) for mirroring or casting.

Since Roku supports Miracast, try using MS Edge to mirror to it; otherwise, use Windows 10's screen mirroring functionality.

uh huh! I don't have W10, I'm using W8.1. I didn't upgrade because if it ain't broke, don't fix it- and it always worked for me.

I'll try MS Edge which I have- though I, so far, haven't like it much- if it works, I'll get back and let you know.

All of what you say- haven't heard anywhere else.

My PC does have a wireless adapter but my wife won't let me turn on the wireless function in the modem as she thinks it causes brain damage. Still confused about this- can't the mirroring go over the Ethernet cable? I haven't yet configured the Roku for the wireless function as it's using Ethernet.

I used to like these technical challenges- getting too old now for any challenges.

Miracast over Infrastructure supports ethernet/wired connections (in Miracast R2/V2 devices).

Miracast requires wireless for the initial discovery/negotiation, even if it later switches to MoI.

Windows 8.1 also supports Miracast screen mirroring, with the same requirements for Miracast-compatible/certified wireless/video adapters.

Roku does not support Miracast over infrastructure (at last check, though the Miracast receiver app was updated for the first time in several years a couple weeks back, have't tested it for MoI yet).

Since you are connected to a vast global information database, and being a "former advanced geek" perhaps you should look it up, in the context of networking: "infrastructure mode"

Bottom line:  You wont be able to screen mirror using Miracast to your Roku unless you enable the wireless adapter/WiFi in your sending device (PC/laptop/notebook/desktop/phone/tablet/etc), and both it and your video adapter have to be Miracast-compatible/certified.
