Roku setup

Hello - 

I have an old TV (Sony Grand Wega KDF-42WE655...it's an LCD projection TV). In the specs, (HDMI IN) section it says it will accept 1080i, 720P, 480p and 480i.

In the back it has an HD section with multi-color ports labeled Y (green), PB (blue) and PR (red).

Above that, there is a standard set of multi-color ports for video (yellow) and audio (white & red).

I think I need to get a Roku Express+ and use the standard multi-color ports (yellow/white/red).

But is there a Roku product that would allow me to use the HD multi-color ports (green/blue/red)?

I had a Sony grand wega until last year when after 20 years of faithful service it gave up.  I had my Roku ultra attached to it with hdmi.  I suggest you use hdmi instead of the three cable ports for best quality.  I always think the Ultra model is the best for nearly every situation and this is yet another one (if dollars are a problem you could get a cheaper one.  Don’t need 4k but the wifi and advanced remote in better models are worth it. )

The Roku express+ model that you are thinking of hasn't been made in years, but the name express+ has been kept and is now applied to a model that only has HDMI ports (like all current Rokus.) The Red/Yellow/White cable connection is composite - SD you really don't want to use those anymore. (Which I suppose is why they stopped making it.)

As mentioned, Roku's last model with analog outputs was the Express+ model 3910, which was released in 2017. It is no longer available on the Roku web site, but can still be found on Amazon and other online sites. However, the price may be far more than you'd expect. And none of the other streaming player manufacturers have analog available any longer. Not Apple or Fire TV. You might find some generic Android player with analog, but I haven't seen any recently. 

About the only option would be to use an HDMI to analog converter. Some Roku users have had success with them, but it's not a guarantee that one will work. Since the HDMI only Roku players don't have a display setting for a 4:3 display/projector, the converter has to handle the aspect ratio change. Not all do it well. 

But your TV has HDMI inputs, so you should be able to use any Roku player. They all support 720p, and your TV supports it. I've also seen some TVs in hotels that weren't 1080p, but they still accepted a 1080p signal from my Roku, so perhaps yours will accept it and internally scale it to 720p. Unlikely since your specs list only 1080i, but you never know until you try it.

Definitely willing to get an Ultra...little concerned about the HDMI connection. I have a Roku Streaming Stick + for another, more modern TV. I put it in the HDMI port of my Sony Grand Wega, then pressed the SAT/Cable function key on the Wega remote control to try to access the Roku stick. Nothing happened.

How did you get your Grand Wega to recognize the Ultra?

Had no problems with Ultra to Wega hdmi connection.  Not sure what it did to 1080p but guessing it just displays as 720p which still looked great. 

not sure why you’re seeing nothing on that other config you mention. I’m sure it’s just an input selection issue probably though and not some inherent issue. 

my wega did me justice by finally dying after twenty years of service because forced me to get a Sony Bravia OLED 55A8G for $2k - looks amazing!!

You might try connecting the Roku both with the TV off and already powered up. Might get the HDMI handshake to work properly with one or the other. Of course, the Roku needs to be fully powered up in either case. 

Then of course you can try connecting it with the Roku powered off and the TV powered up and on the proper input. Then see if first you see the boot screen (the dancing Roku logo) and then if it sets the resolution properly once fully booted.

I can picture this happening if that stick had Display type set to a fixed resolution higher than 720p and it had fully booted up to that resolution before you switched the old 720p Wega to the Roku's HDMI port.
