User Interface: screensaver and roku device taking automatic actions

Hi,

I've used exclusively Roku streaming devices for about 15 years.

Over the last year the behavior of my Roku devices has gotten basically unbearable/unusable with having to cancel actions it takes cause, I'm guessing, it maximizes shareholder returns?

When I'm watching something and press pause it pauses for a while then the screensaver kicks in.

That's fine.

That session should stay paused, exactly where I paused it, until I press another button, in which case the only thing that should happen is the screen saver turns off, or the heat-death of the universe, whichever comes first.

I don't care what service/channel.  Pause means pause till I choose otherwise.  That isn't a hard concept.  But I guess observing that means shareholders lose value so I have to pay for it with my time?  Seriously.  WTELF.

Screensavers, by definition, don't do anything.  They're fine.

If I press any button on my remote after the screensaver kicks in, it's pretty much a **bleep** shoot on what Roku channel will try to install itself or what show will try to load and be forced upon me.  WTELF?  Seriously, eat my sweaty taint.  Who does that and thinks it's okay?

The only fricking thing that should happen when I press a button after the screen saver has engaged, is the screen saver disengages.   That's it.  And you know it.  They don't try to install an channel that I don't want or start a show I didn't choose.  WTELF?   I'm sick and **bleep**ing tired of having to cancel some channel install or the movie you want me to watch when all I did was try to resume watching the show I was watching.

This **bleep** isn't rocket science in UI design.  So I can only assume the UI intruding on me makes money for your oligarchs.

For seasoned programmers, unless you're really upping your rent-seeking behavior to maximize your short-term quarterly profits.  Is that what Roku is doing?  Just be honest if so.

Trying to force me to install channels and watch shows I really don't have an interest in but that you make more money on?

STOP TRYING TO FORCE ME TO WATCH **bleep** THAT MAKES YOU MORE MONEY!!!!!!!

A) Pause means pause

B) any button while screensaver is on only turns off the screensaver.  Nothing more.  ABSOLUTELY nothing more.

FFS.

Re: User Interface: screensaver and roku device taking automatic actions

@RWblah, any button with the exception of Play/Pause should dismiss the screensaver.  If you're seeing something different, something is wrong.  Many of the Roku screensavers have little advertisements floating by for various apps.  Pressing Play/Pause confirms that you want to install that app - note the Play/Pause symbol on the ad.  Press any other button to dismiss the screensaver and then press Play/Pause to continue.

There's also a built in limit to how long you can even remain in an app if not actively streaming.  I believe it's two hours, so you can't pause forever, but that has nothing to do with any screensaver.
