When I turn on my Samsung Smart TV with the ROKU stick connected to HDMI1 or HDMI2 it says it is unknown and will not connect. There is a little red button beside it that looks like an on/off button, leading me to believe it thinks I need to turn the stick on????. When I select troubleshooting I don't see anything for a device that I recognize as a ROKU device. These are the selections: Audio Device, Video Device, Smart Phone, PC, Input Device, Game Console, External Storage. The Video Device shows HDMI and HDMI troubleshooting, but when I select troubleshooting I am expected to turn on the Video Device and there is no way to turn on a ROKU stick. The Input Device list shows Keyboard, Mouse, USB Graphic and Bluetooth Device.... no HDMI listed. I currently have a DISH Satellite system with a Hopper. It was connected to HDMI1, so I connected the ROKU on HDMI2 first. When it was not recognized I tried to find advice online. There was an article that I read that said to try the other HDMI port. When I switched the DISH to HDMI2 and connected the ROKU on HDMI1, both HDMI connections are now marked as unknown but the DISH system still works. Like I said earlier the ROKU stick is not recognized on either HDMI port. FYI: The serial number of the Roku Stick is C237C7955115 and MODEL 3810X.
You lose me at “little red button beside it that looks like an on/off button”. But… I assume the Roku is powered up? (Generally, you want it to be powered by a USB/AC adapter connected to the wall – sometimes a TV USB can work – but not always.) Have you tried pressing buttons on the Roku remote? Ie: try the Home key. Some Rokus have a sleep/low power mode that does look a lot like “off”.
You're right in thinking that the indications are that the Samsung recognizes a new device connected but powered down. I believe you should have an external power supply for that 3810X. Check that.
I have no idea what your problem is but, I think you need to be more specific than "roku stick". There are many roku streaming devices called "roku stick" A model number and serial number will help others assist you..

I added the serial number to the original post.

Thank you. I think that is what I am missing. The connection to the power supply was disconnected.
Thank you. I believe that you have identified the problem.
I have a UN43TU7000 with a Roku Premiere 3920 connected. I use the TV's USB port to power the Roku. Since it's not powered on at all times, the Roku must boot up each time the TV is turned on. But once it's booted, I can use the Roku without any issues. If you want the Roku to be available as soon as the TV is turned on, you need to power it directly from the wall, and not use the TV for power.
