Roku setup without the remote

A friend gave me his old roku but not the remote control. I'm trying to set it up and found remoku thanks to this sub, but it's not detecting any device at my IP address. Does the roku have it's own IP? If so, how can I find out what it is without the remote? I feel like I'm in an endless loop of frustration! Thanks for your help. I'm computer illiterate and feel like a fool.

Re: Roku setup without the remote

The only way to properly use a Roku is to have the remote. You also need to do a factory reset on it to wipe out your friends old setting and account. You can buy a new Roku remote depending on which model you have. The remotes are usually $10-15. But you’re probably better off just buying a new Roku. They are pretty cheap. Do you know how old it is? There are also some aftermarket universal remote for Roku but they only cover certain models.

@tambey64

Nobody is familiar with everything. Don't sweat it.

To set up a Roku device, you need a remote. That includes connecting to a network. You can only connect to a network with a remote.

How to get a remote depends on a couple of things. Is it a stick? That is, does the Roku device have an HDMP jack on the end, and it plug directly into an HDMI port on a TV. If it's a Stick, you'll need a Voice Remote ($20). If it's not a stick, and uses and HDMI cable to connect to a TV, then you could get a cheap universal remote from Dollar General, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, or most anywhere. Just make sure it supports Roku. It'll say so on the packaging.

Compare that to the price of a new Roku. It'll be cheaper to get a remote, of course, but maybe not that much cheaper.

On the other hand, if you get a cheap remote, use the Roku, like it, you may decide to get a second one, and move the hand-me-down to a spare room. And, if you don't like it, you have a spare remote for your TV.

Re: Roku setup without the remote

@tambey64  here’s a list of remotes but understand there’s also shipping fees. As DV already said if you really like the Roku or wanna use it you could just invest in a new one. The Roku Express 4K is about $39
