Roku set up troubleshooting issues

My sister is having trouble setting up her new Roku. When we first got it we paired it and everything but it had said not enough power so we switched where it was plugged up from(Power wise) & now it’s not working or anything. It’s a 4k+ by the way, any ideas?

@Mjunior Not sure what you mean by plugged up from (Power Wise)?  Is this a streaming stick 4k+ or a Roku Express 4k+?  If it is the Streaming stick 4k+ you must use the power cable that came with the stick and plug the power adapter into a wall outlet.  Do not use the USB port on your TV.

@Mjunior-

We can't help if we don't understand the complaint.

I don't understand what "we switched where it was plugged up from(Power wise)" means, either.

Re: Roku set up troubleshooting issues

Sorry for the way I word things, I’m not the best a communication but I’ll try to Blake it easier to understand based of my knowledge. What I mean was she said she had it plugged into the tv but now she plugged it into the wall.

Re: Roku set up troubleshooting issues

Hi @Mjunior,

Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community.

We understand the situation you're in with your Roku device not having enough power and rest assured that we're here to help. We recommend securely attaching the cords to your Roku device and plugging it into a direct power source such as a power outlet. Also, if you're receiving any message prompts or error codes, providing an image here with us regarding this would be best for us to grasp the issue better.

Please keep us posted, we'll certainly assist further.

All the best,
Kash

Re: Roku set up troubleshooting issues

Plugging into the wall for power helps in two situations:

  • If the TV's USB port doesn't supply sufficient power to reliably run the Roku.  It sounds like you ran into that right away and changed it.
  • If the TV's USB port shuts down when the TV is turned off (some do, some don't).  If the TV starts up faster than the Roku does, this can sometimes cause difficulties in which is necessary to then restart the Roku.

So now we need to know what is meant by "it's not working".

  • Were you ever able to get it working but now are having problems, or have you never been able to get it set up and registered at all?
  • When plugged into the wall it should be active all the time.   Does the power light on the Roku come on?  Unplug and replug to see if this changes the power light response.
  • If you unplug the power, then plug it back in, does the initial load screen (dancing R O K O letters) appear?
  • Does it progress beyond the initial dancing letter screen?  If so, what do you see?
  • Any further information you can provide.

We're not there looking over your shoulder.  We only know what you tell us.
