Roku setup

Hello 👋🏻

Okay so I went to an Estate sale in Toronto yesterday and bought a used Roku 1 (2710 series) device for my son who is SEVERELY autistic and his siblings. The person that passed on that originally owned the device, is STILL logged into the device.

I spoke with the company that dealt with the Estate sale and sadly I came to find out that there isn't any paperwork that comes with the Roku 1. 

So long story getting shorter here, I can't factory reset the device without some freaking PIN. 

So what im asking is, WHAT THE **bleep** CAN I DO!?!?! 🤯😵‍💫😫

Do keep in mind that the Roku 2710 is no longer supported as of summer 2020.  It was released back in 2013.  Nearly all Roku devices released before 2013/2014 will no longer receive software updates anymore.  So, what TV set or monitor (where the Roku device is connected to) do you own?

As indicated above, this is an older model and have been made aware that in October 2022, this model will no longer receive Roku OS updates or individual channel/app updates.  As such, depending on what type of content you are watching, it may or not be useful to you after this date.  However, many people here reportedly have very old devices and suits their needs fine.

To perform a Factory Reset, look for the Reset Button on bottom or back of device.  Some have a Reset hole (use paperclip or such) while others have an actual button.  Press and hold this Reset for 30+ seconds while device is powered on.  You need to have a physical working Roku remote in order to set-up a Roku device, so do not perform a Factory Reset unless you have a physical Roku remote. (or a compatible remote for Roku streaming devices)

Not to mention the Roku 2710 is not compatible with the Voice Remote at all. It’s only compatible with the standard IR Remote.  The Voice Remote wasn’t supplied with Roku devices until 2018.

The Roku 3500 Stick will also no longer be supported, possibly beginning in October 2022, because that model was released back in March 2014.  Amazon’s Prime Video is no longer supported on that model, and Google developed apps including YouTube may also be no longer supported on that model.  The 3500 has been supported by Roku Inc. for over eight years now.  That is almost 10 years, and the 2710 is now nine years old, so around the exact 10 year mark of one of the models, both device models will no longer be supported.

Personally, I think the estate sale where the OP went to should’ve had a Roku Express+ 3910 instead.  Of course that one has discontinued production in summer/fall 2018 in favor of the Premiere+ 3921, but software updates are still supported on it.
