The Roku device must be connected to the same network as the smart phone.  Otherwise it won’t work properly.  And even without a WiFi connection, the connection between the Roku and the smartphone will add confusion.  So you’re probably better off buying a replacement physical remote somewhere on either Walmart, eBay or Amazon.  @Tivoburkee is knowledgeable about remotes of any kind, and can help you more in this situation.

I’m into videotapes and old electronics stuff, including extenders, converters and analog 4:3 TV sets (which are obsolete these days), and Miss Bianca is my favorite character in Disney’s The Rescuers (1977) and its sequel, The Rescuers Down Under (1990). I am not a Roku employee, only a user like you. ~ Jordan

@Givjjb  OK well a physical remote is way better to have in general.  I highly doubt the Roku app will solve the issue if it is not connected to the same network as the Roku device.  Also as far as I know, the Roku app only supports iPhone devices and not the iPad.
