I currently own the roku 1 and forgot the remote at my old place. Is there a way I can use the app to connect to the device and use it as a remote? The roku is not connected to my network. any ideas? I tried customer support but very unhelpful.

You can only use the Roku app on a phone to control a Roku that is already connected to your local network. You can't use the app to set up that connection. To do that, you need to have an actual remote that can control the Roku.
The Roku 1, model 2710 (apparently alternately called the Roku SE), was released in 2013. It was sold with a line-of-sight infrared (IR) remote.
You can get the Roku "Simple Remote" to control IR-equipped Roku devices from Roku for about $15 here: https://www.roku.com/products/accessories/player#remotes
You can also find similar remotes, not necessarily made by Roku, for less than $10 at Amazon and Walmart/Target/etc stores, just be sure it is an IR remote for Roku devices, not one for Roku TVs.
There are also many inexpensive IR universal remotes available at these same retailers that can be used with IR-capable Rokus -- just be sure it lists that it can control Roku devices.
Be aware that this 8-year-old Roku lacks the capabilities of today's models and some of the newer popular channel apps will not run on it.
