I've been using an app (not the actual Roku mobile app) as my remote since mine quit over a year ago with no problems. I travel a lot with my job and decided to bring my Roku Express with me this time. Plugged it in to the tv, home screen is there, but neither the app I've been using or the Roku mobile app will do anything!! Roku mobile says it's connected to my device, but nothing! Wth?? So much for their bs hotel/dorm feature!!! How do I get this to work? Typical!?!
You can't connect to a new Wi-Fi network without a remote. Your only hope is to configure your phone's hotspot to match the the Wi-Fi network that the Roku was previously set up for, allow the Roku to connect to that, and then use yet another device also connected to the hotspot and running the app. I'd be surprised if the hotel connect doesn't foil any attempt to go that route. It's far easier to just find a local store that sells a cheap universal remote that supports Roku devices. When you travel, bring a remote.
Obviously if I had the remote I wouldn't be here asking for assistance. However, when I got home a few days after posting my question, I went in to my settings and enabled whatever was supposed to be as instructed and guess what? Wasted effort, because this stupid piece of **bleep** still does nothing. Sits here like the junk that it is, won't respond but hooked up exactly as it should be!!!!!! Roku is a ridiculous waste.
