How does the keyboard work?

I MUST be missing something.

I use the standard Roku app on my iPad. It has a keyboard icon which takes me to an input keyboard. Only, when I input something, nothing happens.

It's like it's not connected to anything. It just takes me back to the main remote page.

I don't know if this is the same on Apple architecture, but on my Android devices, one must cursor to the input field and click on it before input from the Roku app will register there.

 The input appears, it just doesn't affect anything.
