Window-boxed display on 4:3 old TV

Hello,
I am happily using my Roku Express+ with my old 4:3 aspect ratio TV. I have correctly set the correct aspect ratio in the Display Type of the Settings menu. When I stream movies with 16:9 aspect ratio the image is correctly displayed, as letter-boxed.

)
However, when I stream movies with 4:3 aspect ratio I expected the screen would be "filled" with the image. It isn't. The image is "window-boxed".

)
Changing the display type to 16:9 gives a pillar-boxed image and this, of course, is hideously distorted.

What can I do to get the 4:3 image to fill the 4:3 screen correctly?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
