Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

Is it possible that you have your Roku sitting on top of something else? A friend of mine complained that his got too hot. He was right. It got too hot because it was sitting on top of a receiver that vented all of its heat into the place where he put the Roku.

So the Roku would have been fine except for the extra heat flowing into it.

The roku is not bad looking but I wouldn't call it hot. Maybe if I had a couple of drinks in me...

Sounds like you already have. Smiley Happy

Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

I have two Roku XD|S units. Both sitting on top of a relatively cool (room temp) piece of furniture. Both run quite hot, especially on the bottom. Almost uncomfortably hot to the touch.

I have been running my unit placed vertically rather than horizontally and find that significantly lowers the temperature. My personal opinion is that the design is flawed in that there is insufficient air flow around the box and a vertical placement option (such as found with some routers etc.) would have been appropriate. Maybe something as simple as taller "feet" on the box would have improved the amount of air circulation around the unit when placed horizontally?

Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

I have the same issue. I'm happy to hear the disclaimer that it *shouldn't* be a fire hazard. The caustic smell *shouldn't* be all that harmful as well I assume. Mine is a refurb unit. All I can say is do not buy. While the content Roku offers is nice and in some ways better than Apple TV... my Apple tv runs cools and doesn't smell like it's going to melt down.

Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

I expected my LT to run a bit warmer than my roku 1 (more compact and less ventilation) but both are never more than 10 degrees above room temp and never any "fried" odor and they run constantly --- my dvd player runs twice as warm as either of them

Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

My R2 runs much cooler than my XDS R1, which isn't surprising since it uses less than half the power. 2 watts apposed to 5 or 6.

Re: Roku HD player running REALLY hot

I have never heard or read of anyone's house going up in an inferno and the cause of it was the Roku attached to the TV... If one walks over and places their hand on their router, internet modem, cable box, or any other piece of gear that runs for extended periods of time it will be warm to the touch.

You people are just not taking this whole issue seriously enough. There have now been 3-4 reports of this issue in just the last 9 months. This could be a very serious issue.

Actually I agree given the disparity. Those that run warm or hot may have a problem inside. I have an XS and even under heavy use it's neither. I can't even tell it's on except perhaps a less cool spot in the middle of the top.

then again it could be something simple. I noticed mine has a thick layer of felt like material on the bottom with no discernable vent. If the felt is too thin would it block airflow anyway?

Incidently, how is it vented on the top? I was holding mine and I don't feel or see any vents on the tops, sides, or bottom even. It's a solid plastic hockey puck.

edit--

Mine sits on top of a BR player. Perhaps the cool metal underneath it helps keep it cool? It's also next to a Wii which is cool as well since I never turn the thing on anymore. Anyone want to buy a Wii?
