Pulled an Ultra out of the cupboard - how to avoid Roku breaking it?

Hi,

I pulled a Roku Ultra 4660X2 out of the drawer and want to put it back into use.

It was working OK when it was put away - maybe a year ago.

Reading the forum it seems like Roku is causing all kinds of trouble with Ultras.

Is it safe to reset and activate it?  Can I make sure that the firmware is left alone, or is it safe to update it?
