We are taking over development for a channel that has just been transferred to the new owners and I need to know if I should rekey using the old development ID or if I should just genkey a new one. I didn't know if it would mess anything up if we used the old development ID. We have the package files and the passwords, so we can rekey if necessary, just looking for the right way to do this.
The dev key determines what data stored in the roRegistry the channel has access to. If the channel has ever been published and utilizes the registry, then you should use the same key. If there are security concerns about the old developer accessing data stored in the registry, then you should generate a new key. Note, however, that if the channel is signed with a new key, the channel will no longer have access to any data that was previously stored in the registry, so existing users will have to start over as though they are installing the channel for the first time.
