roku stick remote volume control - do I have to point the remote or is it wifi?

Hi - I have a new roku stick.  Remote works great and after getting the CEC setup all done, I can control volume as well.  BUT it seems like volume only works when I'm pointing the remote at the TV (actually projector).  Is that right?  Or should volume still work on wifi like regular?

It only control's roku by wifi, tv's are only controlled by IR. If the wifi voice remote was paired to roku tv, then it woyuld control the volume by wifi. Non-roku tv's are only controlled via IR.
