When I insert a 128 gig thumb drive, Roku Ultra plays media with no problem.
But when I plug in a 256 gig drive, it doesn't even recognize the drive.

So I read that Roku can read partitions, and I partitioned the drive to two 128 gig partitions, and it only reads the second partition. I read that you can ask it to "scan" and it will see both partitions, but it doesn't seem to be so.

Is there a way to force it to see both partitions?
Could Roku possibly update the firmware to address 256 gigs of memory?
And why does it read the secondary partition instead of the primary?

I may have found the problem with blind partitions by sheer accident, while moving the Roku temporarily to another setup. Not absolutely certain, mind you, but it's a work-around. If you have the thumb drive plugged into the Roku before you power it up, it reads the primary partition, but if you plug into power first then insert the thumb drive, it reads the secondary one. So you can switch partitions by unplugging either the power cord or the thumb drive, depending on which one.

Of course, this means that if the power blips out during a storm, it could switch partitions.

It won't report the partition name, so I will likely create a fake ".mkv" file on both partitions with some kind of I.D.

Also, don't turn on Auto Leveling. Gets the audio out of sync.

Routinely use 128gb at ethernet connected Ultra directly in USB port.  Larger drives I install at router USB with few issues.  Not sure if this is suitable solution for you if using wifi Ultra if you need "immediate" retrieval, but may beat rebooting the system as necessary. (But sounds like you have a system that works for you.)

I think for the larger drives connected directly to the Ultra, it is often recommended to have a seperate power supply for the drive.  Possible contribution to the problem reading partitions from larger flash drive.
