Typically, I use the <- key in the upper left corner to get back to the main screen of an app. I believe the * key within apps varies based on what app you are using. (And I think in some apps, does nothing.) What app(s) are you using?
I've removed the batteries and replaced them, have opened the remote and pushed the bottom button on the four-way cross, but nothing is working. I put it back together and tried depressing the button again; nothing.
I use the left arrow button also, but need the bottom button on the purple four-way cross to work. It doesn't so I think I need a replacement. It's not even a year old and came with the TCL Smart TV.

Are you, perhaps, having this problem from within the Directv Stream app?
I don't have Directv Stream so I can't check this, but ... In another thread it was posted that a recent update by Directv changed the access key for library functions from down-cursor to the BACK key near the top of the remote.
