Remote wont Pair - Instead screams like a banshee

I have been seeing a lot of remote pairing issues both here and the subreddit for Roku but doesn't seem like anyone has a fix.  Power cycling does not resolve, already swapped out fresh batteries.  A few seconds after hitting the pairing button the remote starts whining a high pitched tone.  Tried in my standard remote and my voice remote and both make similar noises and fail to pair. Seems like there was a recent software update that fouled some people up and I guess I am caught in that too.  Hoping someone from technical can advise. Roku Ultra (4660, 4661, 4662 series)
