Green light is flashing inside the remote battery cover. Appears remote is not pairing. Stuck on Portuguese as a language. No other screens show.

I am using Xfinity as my network.

Try disconnecting the power from the Roku device for a few seconds and plug it back in while the light on the remote is flashing.  Make sure you have good, fresh batteries and you're holding it close to the Roku.

Thank so much for your response. However, that did not solve the issue. The ROKU  words scroll up and down my screen but the remote is ineffective. The green lite does show it has power and the batteries are new. THIS IS FRUSTRATING. There is no menu or settings screen.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, can you please provide the serial number/device ID on your Roku device? I'll be able to assist you further from there.
