Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

We got a new Roku Ultra.  We have a Samsung (not smart) TV with and XR2 remote.  It seems like the Roku is not compatible?  We got the Roku set up but lost the tv input list on the tv to change between tv, hdmi1, hdmi2.  The Roku seems to have overridden the TV remote so now the Roku remote is the only device that will turn on or off the TV but no other buttons work on the Roku remote.  The TV remote power button does not work, the TV remote buttons do work for the TV except the TV input button and we can't get to TV input HDMI2 to get to Roku so we have no access to the Roku at all...  Any insights?

Re: Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

I tried searching for your remote but have to ask if you're sure about that model number.  When I search for Samsung XR2 Remote, I keep getting links to Xfinity cable box remotes.  So, could you be using the wrong remote?  I can say that the Roku does not interfere with my Samsung TV remote.

Apologies - kind of new to all this...  Samsung is the TV - Remote is indeed an Xfinity remote...  that is the one with the issue described above. Thanks

Re: Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

OK, I'm assuming the TV remote still works. (?)

If so, the Xfinity remote may not be programmed optimally.  ie: the last time I programmed a programmable remote, once Samsung was chosen, there were still a bunch of Samsung codesets to chose from.  And some of the codesets overlapped so that some codes "looked good at first" because they controlled some features, but not all of them

Re: Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

TV remote does work - except to turn on the TV - which it did fine on our previous Roku 3 but isn't working to turn on the TV when I swapped in the new Roku Ultra...  I likely hit a wrong setting - such as saying no to cable box...  but I can't get back into the Roku to do a reset...  In fact I can't get to the Roku at all!

Xfinity remote does not turn on tv but once tv is on it works fine...  Roku remote turns on the tv nothing else...  Roku power is on but I can't access the input list to get to hdmi2 which is what the roku is plugged into?  And I can't do a factory reset because I can't get to the Roku...

Re: Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

Since the TV remote is (mostly) working, you should be able to use it to get to HDMI2.  To be honest, I've never heard of a case where adding some external device prevented a TV remote from working.  Although sometimes HDMI-CEC can add some twists.  I have turned HDMI-CEC off in my Samsung TV (Samsung calls it Anynet+) because I don't like "twists".

It sounds like the Roku remote may not be on an optimal code, given that the volume controls aren't working.  (I think they're not from what you said.)

If you think the Roku is involved in this in some way, you could just unplug the HDMI port that it is plugged into.  (However, I will be surprised if this changes anything – if it did, I would think some kind of HDMI-CEC confusion is going on.)

Just to add another point of confusion – A while ago I had to update the firmware in my parent's Samsung TV.  According to internet chatter, some release of Samsung firmware was causing the TV to try to learn about the remote that was being used, but if you use multiple remotes, this caused its learning system to go haywire.  In my parents' case, they lost all volume control.  But since I updated their firmware a few months ago, all has been well.  (I had to download the firmware onto a USB flash drive and plug it into the TV to update it.)  I'm just grasping at straws on this one.  Their volume control issue was pretty well-known on the internet.  I don’t know about not turning on.

Re: Remote issues between Samsung TV and Roku Ultra

Just to add any other point of misunderstanding – A even as ago I needed to replace the firmware in my parent's Samsung TV. According to internet chatter, some launch of Samsung firmware changed into causing the TV website to attempt to find out about the remote that become getting used, however if you use more than one remotes, this brought on its gaining knowledge of device to head haywire. In my parents' case, they lost all extent control.
