Our friend gave us their roku express. They didn’t have a remote, but we have an old Roku remote. We went to set it up but no remote works in it (including a universal remote). And we can’t connect our phones cause the Roku isn’t connected to the internet yet. How do we control it?

The universal remote should work if it's set up properly.  Does the old Roku remote have a pairing button in the battery compartment?  If not and if it's not from a RokuTV it should also work.  It's possible that the IR receiver in the Express is bad in which case you'd need an RF remote like any of the voice remotes.  You can get a Roku LE at Walmart right now for $15 assuming they still have them.  Its remote would work with any Express model.  You can't use the app until it's connected to your network and that requires a working remote.
