SOLVED (sorta): I ended up just buying a generic $6 remote from Amazon then I followed these steps.

1. unplug TV for 10 seconds then plug back in

2. While TV is powering on hold down the home and back button on the remote for 20 seconds

3. it should work now!! 🙂

Probably no longer looking for a fix but hope this helps someone else. I bought an Onn remote for TV and Streaming from Walmart and that fixed the issue.
