If the app can't see the TV, then it's probably due to a setting on your router that blocks wireless devices from seeing each other.
Most Roku TVs come with an IR remote, so there's no connection to be made. But if you buy a WiFi Direct remote, yes it should connect automatically. You could also just buy a universal IR remote, but make sure the remote supports Roku TVs, as Roku players use a different IR code set from the TVs.
