I have 2 Roku Ultras that I have used for at least 2 years; the remotes have always worked fine and controlled the TV volume until last night. Power works and controlling the Roku works. I have reset for TV, but all 50 codes were tried and nothing worked; this worked yesterday! Even stranger, I was going to swap the Roku device with another one, but the 2nd Roku is doing the same thing on a different tv! Stranger still, I plugged in ANOTHER Roku Ultra, and it does the same thing on both TVs. I noticed that my remote says "Gaming Remote", and I don't see a way to change that and no idea what a Gaming Remote is since I don't use it for any type of game. I see online that a Gaming Remote does NOT control volume, which I assume is the problem here. How do I change it to a normal remote? Seems like Roku pushed an update that broke it to me. I have no remote for one of the tvs, so this inconvenience makes the remote pretty much useless. Please help because I really don't want to switch to Fire TV.
Your remote is the RC-AL4 that has the A & B keys? It is considered gaming remote with A & B key, you could turn it sideways and use it like a gaming controller. Many have had the volume stop working after upgrading to 10.0.0 software. See if the roku can be upgraded, then try restart of the roku, with new batteries in try reprogramming remote for your tv:
settings> remote & devices> remote> remote in use> program tv> follow prompts
Thanks. Yes, it has the A B buttons, and I see how it could be used for gaming. Can that 10.0 "corrupdate" be fixed. It has worked fine for years. I have already restarted and reprogrammed the remote, and it sill cannot find a tv to control. Do I have to buy a different remote for it?

A different remote, such as the Voice Remote ($20) or the Enhanced Voice Remote ($30), will solve the issue. However, you shouldn't have to do that.
For what it's worth, I replaced my Roku 3 remote (same as what your early Ultra has) with the new remote. Not because of any problem, but I used one once and liked it better. Whether it's worth $20 or $30 to you is another matter.

The rc-al4 remote has tv IR built-in and it has the gaming buttons. Roku use to sell them separately but the remote that replaced it rc-al9 doesn't have the gaming buttons.
