Can I plug portable speakers into my Roku remote via 3.5mm jack? I want to use private listening mode but have sound come through the speaker's instead of headphones.

If they're powered it should work.  If not, you may not get enough volume out of them.  Either way you should know that private listening tends to eat remote batteries.

Are these speakers with their own  power supply and/or batteries?  If not, all the power will come from the remote and it will quickly drain the remote's batteries.

The remote's headphone amplifier will be activated whenever a cord is plugged into the remote's headphone jack so be sure to remove the plug when not in use.
