I just bought a Roku+ streaming stick and set it up on my TV (Sharp). I can use the TV remote to access the right HDMI and see the set-up page, but the Roku remote with the package didn't seem to work - I added different batteries, etc (the pin light on the remote doesn't light). So, thought maybe the remote is defective and ordered another Roku. The remote on that package also doesn't light up or seem to connect to the stick....not sure what is going wrong?!
Either a most unfortunate coincidence, or, and you won't like this, the batteries were put in the wrong way. Since all aspects in common of two seemingly separate issues should be ruled out -- basic troubleshooting -- and since the same person likely put the batteries in both, that should be checked before being ruled out as a cause.

Or the batteries were just bad. More than one person has reported that the batteries received with their new devices were bad.
Thanks, I put the batteries in and they are in the correct direction, and I checked that the batteries work - I.e., they work in other devices...
Could it be that there is some issue with the remote connecting to the Roku stick bc of my particular type of TV?
You have to have included the lang-range wireless receiver connected to the stick+, that's what the remote is communicating with, not the stick+ itself. This is what I'm referring to:
