So, my dad's Roku died over the weekend. He had a Roku 3 (I don't know which model, wasn't there 2 models of Roku 3s? He's had it for quite a while) I suppose ultimately my question is... can he use his old Roku remote with any of the newer Roku players?
He doesn't do a lot with it, he doesn't have a 4K TV - so I'm really not sure if a cheap Roku Express isn't the best solution. But I noticed the remote for the Express does not have a headphone jack. Every so often he uses the headphone jack - I'm not really sure if he uses it enough for the lack of one to be a deal breaker - but I was wondering if the old Roku 3 remote would work with a Roku Express and if the headphone jack would work?
It powers on. Lights come on and I can connect to it over the network. Just doesn't get any signal.
I've tried different HDMI cables and different power supplies (actually brought it to my house, I have the same Roku, and used my power supply and HDMI cables). I've tried pressing the reset button. It's a pretty simple box, not a lot that can be done to diagnose any issues.
I did not have developer mode enabled on it, so I can't telnet into it or anything. But for example the ECP URL:
Gave me the apps list on it. So in a sense, it's working... just not giving an output on the HDMI port.
Any insight on how to fix it?
My best guess is something in the HDMI port shorted out.
Yeah, sounds like you tried everything.. I guess if you've tried a hard factory reset and still haven't gotten a signal, the it's toast. Just to make sure, hold down the reset button while powering on, for 30 seconds, and release.
If no luck, your best bet is to get a used Roku 3 or Roku 2 (make sure you get the same vintage as the Roku 3 you're replacing, not the super-old Roku 2 XD/XS).
Yeah, I got some Rokus. https://youtu.be/d1CSEeqWl10
