Roku Remote only controls A/V Receiver for a few moments after using LG remote

I have the weirdest thing happening and I cannot make any sense of it!

I have my LG remote programmed to control the volume on a Denon receiver (hooked up through optical).

Every time I use the LG remote to control volume, the Roku remote will also work to control the volume, but only for a few moments after. If I want the Roku remote to work for volume control, I need to use the LG remote first.

I cannot figure out what is going on. Anybody seen something like this before?

 

Roku is plugged into HDMI on LG TV. LG TV is sending audio to Denon receiver via optical.

Please be aware that Roku device remotes do not support control over AVRs.
