My remote control went crazy and is not working. If I click the left arrow it goes up. If I click the mute button it turns it off. The pairing button does not work. And yes it has new batteries,  and I have disconnected the the stick cable from the electricity. Please help!

You didnt mention your Roku model # and firmware version: Settings/System/About

(You can use the Roku Remote app from your phone/tablet to check this information)

If its a stick, make sure you are not using the TV to power it - use the supplied USB AC wall adapter

Did you remove the batteries for a minute or two and replace them?

Does the pairing button start flashing green when you hold it for at least 5 seconds?

The problem could be at the remote end, but it also could be that the Roku is receiving the correct signals but is reacting improperly.  

These things are just little special purpose computers. Like their big brothers sometimes clearing things out by restarting them is all it needs.

If you have sufficient control via the remote, restart via Settings > System > System restart (Or for Roku TV: Settings > System > Power > System restart)

If you can't control via remote, try pulling the power plug to the device for a minute or so then plugging it back in.
