Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

Every time I try to open content on a streaming site, my roku express reboots.

Re: Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

Can you please be a little more specific. Which channel has it happened with, and exactly what happens when you select the channel? Do you get an opening logo, or does the Roku immediately reboot? What firmware version is the Roku running? You can see that on the Settings/System/About page.

Re: Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

Roku Express.

Every single streaming channel I’ve tried makes the screen black and forces the box to reboot with the bouncing roku starting screen upon me trying to pull up a video. It sometimes even does it just when I’m on home screen trying to get to settings.

Settings say the WiFi connection is good. I’ve tried system resets 3 times, moving HDMI connections, turning it off and on, factory resets, turning the resolution down to 720p, and uninstalling individual channels. No dice.

Re: Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

OK, thanks for that. Honestly, it sounds like a defective box. There's no reason for every channel to do that, as they all are written by different developers. There are only two constants: the hardware and the firmware. Since I haven't heard of anyone reporting a similar issue with OS 9.2, it really does seem to be hardware related. If you are within an exchange window from where you bought it, I would get it exchanged. If you are outside that, send a private message here in this forum to either @RokuDanny-R or @RokuTannerD for help. Since it's Saturday afternoon here in the western US, it might be Monday morning before they receive your message.

Re: Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

Have you tried restarting the device?
Settings > System > System restart
(Or for Roku TV: Settings > System > Power > System restart)

These things are just little special purpose computers, after all. Like their big brothers sometimes you just need to clear things out by restarting them.

Thanks for trying to help, though!

Re: Why do streaming channels force a reboot?

How are you powering it?  If it's plugged into your TV's USB port, try the power adapter that came with it.  If you're already doing that, it sounds like a defective device.
