Have a Premier and am running high speed HDMI from Roku to Vizio smart TV via HDMI input. Then running optical out to AVR (Onkyo 805). Have set the Roku audio to DD as recommended by company rep. Tried every other configuration of connection available (direct to AVR, then to TV), still no 5.1 signal. Here is how I have narrowed it down to the Roku:
Using a basic OTA antenna, I can pull in 5.1 signals from all major broadcast networks, and confirmed the TV can pass it (via optical output) and that AVR sees it as 5.1
If I stream Netflix DIRECTLY THROUGH THE TV (bypassing the Roku) I get a 5.1 signal (confirmed by audio setup of Netflix content which says English 5.1) - and AVR confirms a 5.1 signal
In my mind, the above eliminates the TV and the AVR as the source of the problem -- it is only when I add the Roku to the mix that I only get PCM stereo only signal to AVR
Roku wants me to send unit back but I want to confirm with others out here if there is any solution left before I forfeit my unit for a week or more only to get another one that will likely have the same problem.
You needed to get a Roku Ultra model to decode Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital to make it readable by your AVR. Likely it does not via optical port, so that's the issue. That was one of the main features people asked for years for Roku to support this and they did with the Roku Ultra model.
So you recommend I should negotiate a return and replace with the Ultra? Before I go to that kind of trouble is there any way to be 100% sure this will fix my issue? Roku rep seemed to think the Premier would pass that signal no problem.

If AVR is Onkyo TX-SR805, then you need to use the HDMI inputs on the Stereo rather than the Optical.
I did...no change. The onkyo is designed to automatically detect the signal (which it does) and it only comes in as PCM Stereo. I was very surprised by this as surely the Onkyo (which is pretty advanced despite its age) would pick up any 5.1 signal.
Any other ideas or suggestions? The thought that I cannot get 5.1 content with such a powerful, capable AVR and 5.1 program material is particularly aggravating.
Have you tried Roku -> AVR via HDMI, and AVR -> TV via hdmi (for video)? That's how I have always hooked up my Roku's (had a model as old as the original Roku 2 XS from I believe 2010 that could decode Netflix 5.1 DD+ that way).
Yeah, I got some Rokus. https://youtu.be/d1CSEeqWl10
Yes I tried that connection and replicated it again just now. No 5.1 signal displayed in the content itself (if you go to Audio/Subtitles setting of a Netflix item like Breaking Bad) or the on the AVR display. Display confirms PCM stereo signal only....no 5.1.
BUT, as soon as I stream Netflixdirectly from built-in TV app, it shows English - 5.1 in Audio/Subtitles AND also shows all five channels active on the AVR display. Same when I switch to OTA antenna.
The ROKU is the only variable that changes the signal back to PCM stereo. Remove that and I get 5.1 back
