Roku stream working / not working

For the first couple months, my ROKU stick worked. I'm in the middle of a series.  On same program, it works when I start the program one-time; the next time I try to play the same program, I'm told to unplug the stick, take the power supply out, turn off TV, etc. I do this and it works -but gets really annoying.

I've not changed anything since when I first setup the stick.  Why is this happening now. Is the stick defunctive?

So your message comes across your TV screen telling you to unplug your Roku? I’ve never seen such a message. Exactly which Roku model stick do you have? Can you provide a picture of this message? What are you trying to watch when this happens? Turning your TV off won’t have anything to do with your Roku

@CaribeCastaway-

Nor have I.  Are these instructions you subsequently find when trying to research the problem?

If a restart fixes things I wonder if the following might be involved:

Starting with Roku operating system version 10.5, Roku added a "Power" item in the "Settings > System" menu for some of the newer Roku devices. The new "Auto power savings" item there will put your Roku device into a low power standby condition after a period of inactivity, such as when your TV has been turned off for a while.

Pressing a Roku control key (like the Home button) on your Roku remote (not Power, Volume, or Mute buttons if your remote has them, as they act on the TV, not the Roku) should bring the Roku out of standby and back to full operation. Pulling the power for a few seconds to restart the Roku will restore full operation as well.

If you disable "Settings > System > Power > Auto power savings" it should prevent your Roku from going into standby in the first place. The power savings are not that great and for the hassle it causes, I don't think it's worth having this feature activated.

Re: Roku stream working / not working

Sorry for the delay responding and thank you for suggestion.  I was waiting to trigger the error again and it only happened tonight.  I'll try your suggestion as it seems plausible.  My only other thought is my TV is 5 years old.  It's internals may be older but still, it should support HDCP.
