New Ultra 4800R: set up and watched a youtube episode of an Aussie home building show, stuttering...

Hi All:

just upgraded from an 8 yr old Roku3 to the Ultra 4800R yesterday. set it all up and got it the way i like to use it.  fine.

watched my first show last night: an Australian home building show, one episode.  During playback, from time to time, there are very brief FROZEN moments of the action on screen, sort of like the person stopped moving for a short time, maybe 0.5 seconds or so.  i don't recall this ever happening with my 8 year old Roku3!

may i ask if this is normal and just a part of how youtube is?  i rarely watch youtube on my Roku or tv except when looking for these UK or Australian home building shows which often, the new episodes can only be found on youtube.

might this stuttering also happen to my other channels on the Ultra like Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO GO, etc?   i used my Roku3 often, almost every night, and so since my Ultra was set up last night, i'd expect to use the new Ultra every night as well.  it would be a major disappointment if it doesn't even perform as well as my 8 year old Roku3!!!  concerned.

Assuming you have firmware 9.4.1-4236 and YT app version 1.0.93000138....

And assuming your internet download speed is stable....

Make sure you have Settings/Audio/HDMI="Auto passthrough"

You might also consider toggling Settings/System/Advanced system settings/Advanced display settings/Auto adjust display refresh rate=enabled

Otherwise, you need to answer that question of other app behavior for yourself.

Re: New Ultra 4800R: set up and watched a youtube episode of an Aussie home building show, stutterin

@StreamerUser :  thank you very much for your reply.

just checked using my Android Roku app, yes, the firmware is 9.4.1-4236.

i received and set up my Ultra 4800R yesterday and it automatically updated itself as the first step after connecting to the internet.  fyi:  it is connected via ETHERNET (as all audio visual devices are on an AV media equipment rack in a closet).  the internet service is Verizon FiOS with no severe loads at all on the bandwidth (watching Roku/Youtube without using many other devices).

i do not know how to get the Youtube app version, but as i downloaded everything and set everything up merely yesterday, i would assume that it is Youtube's latest app version - please correct me if i'm wrong and also kindly please tell me how to get the Youtube app's version number.

the settings you asked me to check:

"Make sure you have Settings/Audio/HDMI="Auto passthrough"

You might also consider toggling Settings/System/Advanced system settings/Advanced display settings/Auto adjust display refresh rate=enabled"

are these done when i have my projector turned on or can i do these settings on my Android Roku app as well?  i don't see how i could do these settings on my Android Roku app.

thanks again. hope to hear back from you.

To get an app version, highlight the app, press Options (*)

To change settings, click on Settings from Home.

You need to change these settings from the UI (not the app, unless you are using the app virtual remote to navigate the UI)

Re: New Ultra 4800R: set up and watched a youtube episode of an Aussie home building show, stutterin

@StreamerUser :   thank you again for your suggestion and details.

i just checked:

-  Audio/HDMI was on Auto Detect, but i changed it to AUTO PASSTHROUGH based on your suggestion

-  Advanced Display settings was OFF, but i changed it to "ON" based on your suggestion.

NOTE PLEASE:   my Roku Ultra goes to my Onkyo AVR which then outputs to a 1080 projector, so the Roku Ultra does NOT go directly into a TV.

does that change your suggestions on those two abovementioned settings please?

thank you.

No, though indirect connections (such as through an AVR) to a display device can cause EDID/handshaking issues with Roku devices.

Do some streaming/testing with YT and other apps, and see if the stuttering occurs etc.

If it does, check your downloads speeds, or try to directly connect to the projector to troubleshoot.
