Dolby Digitial playing from Emby to soundbar only comes out as chirps

I have Emby on my Roku 4 outputting audio over optical to my soundbar.

Recently anytime I play anything besides stereo it comes out as just chirps. If I force stereo on the Roku, it plays (stereo) fine. I'm not sure if the problem is with the Roku, Emby or the soundbar.

I've tried changing all of the audio settings I could find on both devices, but I can't get DD sound out.

Re: Dolby Digitial playing from Emby to soundbar only comes out as chirps

An update from Roku operating system 9.4 to 10.0 is currently rolling out, unit by unit, via some schedule known only to Roku. Settings/System/System update will show you your current Roku version number and when it was installed. If you are on version 10, does its installation date coincide with the beginning of this problem?

It's possible that Emby needs to update their Roku app to be compatible with Roku 10.

Yes, the installation of 10 coincides with the time of the problem. I'll see if Emby has a beta or something.

I've removed Emby from the problem. Playing the same file from the Roku Media Player app produces the same problem.

You might try connecting/outputting the Roku's audio to your TV (via HDMI) to troubleshoot the problem a bit more (might just be the optical with the current build of 10).

You can also try reverting the firmware to 9.4 (if available:  Home 5x, FF 3x, RW 2x, Update software, Update now).

Otherwise, report this to Roku:  chat or email   https://support.roku.com/contactus/contact-options    (setup/ultra/other/need more help?)

Ok, no older firmware listed, but changing to using HDMI out rather than optical fixed it. I just have to see if I can rework the rest of my cable tangle to work with that change.

HDMI supports more formats/higher bitrates than optical, so if your soundbar has HDMI and/or HDMI ARC (connect through the TV), I'd use that instead.

I still highly recommend reporting it to Roku.
