Re: Audio dropouts with HE-AAC on Roku Media Player (RokuOS 10)

Keep in mind this affects LC-ACC as well.  Most everything I use is encoded that way and still has the issue.

Do you use the media player app to play the files or something else like plex?  My stuff is also on a dlna server and previously I used Playon, but once this issue hit it impacted their app as well.

Seems I have to encode in ac3 for anything to work correctly right now.

I have had no issues with LC-AAC (stereo @96 kbits/sec  and 5.1 @ 684 kbits/sec) with my own testing.

I use the Media Player App with a DLNA server (I haven't tried putting things onto a USB stick for the Ultras... but still, I shouldn't have to?)

I see similar problems with AC3 as well - but this depends on parameters. For example, the following play perfectly:

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Commercial name : Dolby Digital
Codec ID : A_AC3
Duration : 59 min 31 s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 192 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel layout : L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz
Frame rate : 31.250 FPS (1536 SPF)
Bit depth : 32 bits
Compression mode : Lossy
Delay relative to video : -5 ms
Stream size : 81.7 MiB (2%)
Writing library : Lavc58.54.100 ac3
Language : English
Service kind : Complete Main
Default : Yes
Forced : No

But the following drops out every 15-20s:

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Commercial name : Dolby Digital
Codec ID : A_AC3
Duration : 1 h 11 min
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 128 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel layout : L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz
Frame rate : 31.250 FPS (1536 SPF)
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 65.0 MiB (6%)
Service kind : Complete Main
Default : Yes
Forced : No

The problem with some AC3 tracks started after upgrade to 10.0, the same as with HE-AAC. Before this upgrade I have never seen any problems!

What contain is everyone using? (this shouldn't matter, but more info is better than no info, right?)

I have everything in MKV myself.

This STILL hasn't been fixed! What the heck roku?!

Can someone please tell me the best audio format to convert something to and which program is best to use for MacOS? Thanks!

Can't speak for Mac, since the software I use doesn't work on it.  Just try and find something that has the option to skip converting the video so it will go faster.

I just use AC3 and haven't had an issue with playing anything.

Handbrake is free and it works on a mac but it can be slow but you can choose to ignore video conversion if you wish.

ffmpeg is probably the most powerful and flexible option.  It's also probably the most difficult to learn and use, but if you google what you're trying to do, you can usually find that someone has developed a command format to do it.   There are versions for Windows, Linux and Mac.

I'm seeing the same with AC3.  Really annoying.  Its like the clock for pass through is not being set correctly.  Hardly surprising since HDCP problems seem to be the next most popular problem and that is essentially the same issue - incorrect clock means the playback device isn't handshaking correctly with the roku device.

No problem with close to 100 AC3 converted files - whatever XMedia Recode uses
