3400M with Viewsonic Projector

I recently bought a Viewsonic PJD7720 Projector which has a HDMI/MHL port and started to look at what might be the best way to wireless connect this to my emby server.  My short search led me to the pretty old 3400M, as very few streaming devices seem to have adopted MHL, and most newer models require USB power.

I tracked one down on ebay in the US and with overseas postage paid well over what I suspect it's worth, but if it meant I didn't need cables in the lounge when I'm using the projector it would be worth it.  Roku stick arrived today along with a pretty square looking remote so I fired it straight into the projector and up popped the Roku logo.  After a minute or so that stopped bouncing and I got the set-up menu asking me to select a language, but that's where I'm stuck!

The remote doesn't seem to work and the Roku app will only control the device once it's connected to a wireless network.  I also have a Harmony Remote and have tried adding various Roku devices to that, but I still can't get past the language selection.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Oof.  Yeah, that stick is really old and won't perform well at all.  Check for a pairing button under the battery compartment.  You won't be able to go any further without a paired remote, the stick will only respond to a paired remote until you get network set up.

Just to be sure, this is the device? https://amzn.to/2rlrFPs

If so, and if I recall correctly, the remote was rounded. The nearly square remotes were for the first generation Roku, and are IR remotes.

If the arrow buttons are black, it’s likely the wrong remote.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Yes, it looks a little like the one in the link, but here's the ebay link which shows the remote (feel free to laugh at how much I paid for it!) > https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roku-Streaming-Stick-2nd-Generation-3400M-MHL-Purple/253556312850

I wasn't expecting stellar performance, but the lure of wireless projection was too great.

Would it pair with any Roku remote that has that functionality? Wondering if I could try and find someone local and borrow their remote, or maybe even buy one and return it Smiley Surprised

Nope.  That is the wrong remote for that unit.

Just curious, if the projector is up there then I'd imagine there's power right?  That's all you need for a stick.

Nope. The remote for the 3400 is a remote peculiar to that device. The one in the picture in your link is indeed a first generation IR remote. It is definitely NOT the remote that came with a new 3400.

Re: 3400M with Viewsonic Projector

Thanks again.  Yes, it's getting power as I see the bouncing Roku logo and then the set-up screen is projected, but no way to navigate my way through the set-up.  I suspect if I could connect to wifi my Harmony remote would work, but can't even get that far.

So a remote from one of the new Streaming Sticks won't work either?

Re: 3400M with Viewsonic Projector

Never tried, but I understand that Stick (MHL) used its own unique remote.

And the Harmony remote is IR. You need the right remote for setting up that Stick.

FWIW, the description of that eBay item appears to be incorrect. It says “new.” The box looks like the ones for refurbished items, as new items are usually in a white box and include an outer covering. Plus the wrong remote; that is a first generation IR remote in the picture.

Don’t wait too long to pursue a return, if necessary.

Re: 3400M with Viewsonic Projector

Thanks for the info.

I suspect I'll lose even more money returning it for a refund than I'm in for already, so will probably try and find a different solution or just chalk up as a loss.

Sounds like that could be tricky though, as I'll need a 3400M remote!
