Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

For you tech support to look at.

Most of the problems currently occuring with sign ins is that http has been deprecieated in all browsers. As of the begining of the year, all default to https for the added security. At places such as Marriot and Hilton, they have a http login page that is ready to lauch which intercepts an http web page - which used to be your home page, and forces it to display an http page. It is a hack. You then log in, and that goes away. Now, your browser launches your home page, one that is https://. Your home page is most likely to be secure, and being secure, it blocks the page that the hotel is trying to serve. So you frequently get an unable to connect. You are connected, but have not been allowed to sign in. To fix, navigate to an unused, unsecure, http web page. I use http://www.embassy.com, since you are attempting to connect to an unused http site, the hotel can jump in and allow sign-in.

As for the roku, in setting, we need a very basic login browser, that will allow an http connection to log in to the hotel. It seems the "hotel or dorm" part of the setting is connecting to your phone, and seeing your phone was "connected". at this point, it doesn't allow you to do anything, it is connected, it just does not understand that it does not yet have internet service. Roku does not wait for the login prompt, probably because your phone is not going to get a sign-in prompt -without jumping through hoop, you cannot get an http connection.

Testing: Will be in a Hilton property next week. I will set my homepage in my phone to a fake http:// site, like http://aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.com, then see if the roku connects. Otherwise will use WiFi tethering to allow my phone to serve up the stream. If anyone tries the above, try to figure out which browser is default, and use that for the fake homepage. i.e. I use firefox on my phone, but believe the default may be Chrome, I just don't launch it. If Chrome has a fake homepage, is should not matter.

Pardon the extreme brain dump, but went off on a hotel recently that couldn't even tell me how to get my phone to attach, had to dig.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

I tried all the suggestions on here.  What worked for me is using a private network and entering the hotel wifi "hhonors" it then recognized hotel mode.  Once I entered my credentials all was good.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

Two years later and STILL NO SOLUTION for this **bleep** problem. I LIVE at a hotel and every single day I have to authenticate all over, which isn't a problem for my phone, tablet, e-reader, laptop or dozens of other devices yet my Roku TV which is one of the more expensive of these items can't figure out that it needs to give me the hotel Authenticator prompt. I've tried everything. It'll be be fine for a few days then it stops working again. It'll connect to the internet without the authorization which means you aren't "really" connected since you have no authorization to use the network. This is so lame.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

Marriott allows some network connectivity before logging in, and this fools the ROKU into thinking you are online when you're not. They need to create a manual option for Hotel/dorm mode so we can complete the login process.

Roku gives us no way to do that. Shame.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

These steps are useless! Several people are reporting the same issue - there is no prompt to select I’m in a hotel or dorm. My device is up to date, device connect is enabled, and I restarted twice! There is clearly an issue that is not addressed in your existing help documentation! The hotel connect does not work!

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

In one hotel it worked and has not worked sense.  Roku seems to be a piece of garbage with what appears to the be worst customer service imaginable.  Do you folks ever read this complaints?  Doo you ever respond?

i get past the connection to the local hotel wifi only to have it totally stop there.  not prompt at all for a password or other credentials, not will it give me the codes to connect directly.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

This should be a Saturday night live skit, every time you ask the question they will just resend you the same effing instructions on how to log into a hotel Wi-Fi. They don’t want to solve any problems just regurgitate the same answers. Many have offered great suggestions such as adding a browser so we can login without a third device or a manual way to force the hotel option, but don’t hold your breath with this company.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

Thank you, this worked! I got the Internet Tech Support number from the hotel front desk, and they had my Roku connected  in less than five minutes.

Re: Roku not showing hotel prompt

Ahh that makes sense, so it runs its little check and thinks the internet is connected, what a pain.
