Like some other posts floating around on the internet, I am in an apartment with a ready-to-go Calix C844G router with 802.11ac and it will not connect to the Roku, it fails every time on the "Connect to Local Network" step. I wanted to see if there has been any resolution to this issue, and/or add to the chorus warning others to avoid the device if your internet setup is like mine.
Thank you! I almost gave up on connecting my TV. I couldn't figure out why my Insignia TV with Roku could connect to my phone via tethering, but not to my Calix C844G router. Allowing special characters as you detailed did the trick.
@reallynotnick Thank you so much! We were losing our minds over this- trying everything under the moon. Turns out you were right- the router was not allowing devices with special characters. Once I changed that- it connected immediately! I wish Roku customer service knew this for people with future problems like this. I went back and forth with them over email about four or five times, and was able to find your solution on my own. I ended up letting them know the deal- copied your steps in an email and pasted the link to this thread. They really need to know this! Such a headache that can be easily avoided. Hopefully they care enough to make permanent note of it.
The real solution is for Roku to just follow the accepted standard and not use special characters in their hostnames.
