Roku Express messing with the Wifi

Hi guys,

Since I started using Roku Express on my TV, I lose Internet connection at least 4 times a day for the whole house.

I've noticed that this happens most often when I'm on streamyard or on a call in Google Meetings with more then 10 peoples.

The current solution is to restart WiFi whenever lose connection or turn off Roku when you need a stable connection.

If someone is watching something with Roku and I'm in an online meeting, after a few minutes, we lose our connection at home.

Devices:

ROKU EXPRESS 3930BR

Access Point Model: TP-Link TL-WR941ND

My internet by Google / M-Lab speed test:

Download 85.5 Mbps

92.1 Mbps upload

2012 TV SAMSUNG MODEL: UN40ES6100G

Thank you very much for your help

Re: Roku Express messing with the Wifi

You are probably saturating your connection, especially on the upload side (from your meetings), and/or your modem/router/gateway cant handle it.

This is common with P2P applications/services and other upload heavy connections (like meetings/conferences).

You didnt mention your internet speed tier (download/upload speeds unknown), but you may need to both increase it, and/or get a new modem/router/gateway (model(s) unknown).

Re: Roku Express messing with the Wifi

Hi Streamer user, thanks for the reply.

Not sure if this is a saturation issue.

Because before using Roku Express I used to watch movies on Netflix (on my 2012 smart tv samsung's native app) and make lives and call at the same time and never had any problems

Do you have another suggestion?

Re: Roku Express messing with the Wifi

Who is your ISP?  What speed tier are you paying for?

The Google/Mlab speedtest is browser-based and therefore wildly inaccurate.  Do not use it.

Download and install a native app from Speedtest.net.  Do not use their browser speedtest.

e.g. 64-bit/32-bit Windows app:  https://www.speedtest.net/apps/windows

However, I can tell from your download/upload rates that your router/gateway is WAN-speed limited to 100Mbps (since your download is slightly less than your upload).

And when I look up the specs of the TP-Link TL-WR941ND, it only has a 100Mbps WAN port (and LAN ports), so your router/gateway is the limiting factor and its WAN port is being saturated with multiple simultaneous devices/connections, and its processor is unable to keep up with the load, so dropped packets/connections/reboots are the result.

It also only supports Wireless-N (WiFi 4 - 2009), which is a 12 year old WiFi standard - the current standard is Wireless-AX (WiFi 6 - 2019/2021).  Roku devices with 5Ghz support Wireless-AC (WiFi 5 - Wave1=2013, Wave2=2016)

You need to replace your router/gateway with one that has:  1Gbps WAN/LAN ports, WiFi 6/6e
