Can't connect Roku to network

Suddenly Roku doesn't connect to my network. Everything is fine. Have performed all the suggestions from Roku. Nothing. This is so sudden. Have been using Roku for over a year and no issues. Does anyone have a solution that actually works? I have read a lot of posts that don't seem to address the issue.

Re: Can't connect Roku to network

  1. What model Roku? Model number, not name
  2. Does the Roku see your network, or is the network not even visible?
  3. If it sees the network, what error (if any) are you getting?

Re: Can't connect Roku to network

Model 4800X. Roku sees my network. Don't get an error, instead the screen shows unable to connect with network using a red button. And it advises that I should restart Roku. Have done that a number of times. I have also unplugged the unit from electricity and from the tv it works with. Waited a few minutes and no change.

Re: Can't connect Roku to network

@pbmarrow has it ever connected? Trying to see if this is something that just cropped up or an ongoing problem. Have you attempted to connect it via an Ethernet cable, just as a test? Want to ensure the networking in the box is working.

Assuming it has connected before, but now cannot, let's look at your router settings. The 4800 works on both WiFi bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz. However, it won't work on all channels in those bands. Of course, you shouldn't even see your WiFi if it's on an unusable channel, so that's likely not the issue. But on 5 GHz there are channel width settings that might cause an issue. Most routers offer channel widths of 20, 40 and 80 MHz. If yours is on 80 MHz, you might try reducing it to 40 or 20. It makes the connection slower, but no Roku can use the full potential speed of a 5 GHz connection anyway. On 2.4 GHz, there are also channel width selections, so if it's set higher than 20 MHz try dropping it down.

If you are using the same SSID for both radios (most do by default), you don't know which band you are trying to use. Many people (such as myself) use a different SSID name on 2.4 and 5 GHz, so we always know which one we're connected to. There are pros and cons to using either band.

Re: Can't connect Roku to network

First, thank you for your willingness to help!

This is a problem that crept up without warning. We have been using Roku for years although one of our units is new - that is about 3 or 4 months old. But new or old, they have been working fine until now.

The router for Verizon Vios is out in the garage making the Ethernet problematic.

I will check out your suggestions concerning the settings and let you know. Again, thank you for your help.

Re: Can't connect Roku to network

Don't forget that ISPs like Verizon (and others) can often change settings in your router without your knowledge. There have been reports of ISPs completely turning the 2.4 GHz radio off, and other things that affect Roku users. Let us know what you discover.
