Thanks! My Roku was getting power from the TV and couldn't update. I plugged the USB cable into a charger and it worked. After the update I plugged it back into the TV.
Update: If anyone needs to quickly find my post "how I solved error 004 updating issue on older Express and Plus models" just remember that it's on the top of page 10 of this Issue Tracking Board thread. By following those steps, you shouldn't have to factory reset your Roku device. Hopefully, this workaround helps you because I'm unsure if this will work for all Roku device models.

@XenOsTwo, I found out that if the Roku isn't able to use the Hotel and Dorm Connect feature, plugging the Roku into an outlet (instead of the TV) fixes that issue as well. Also, you may have stumbled on a way toward stopping your Roku from getting a future OS update until you're certain that there aren't any issues and you're ready to update the OS on your own time. If only I could power my Roku from my TV 😞

Unable to update today receiving Error Message 004. Your fix worked last week but have the same problem today.
@Jean13 (and everyone else):
What Roku device are you having this issue with?
I have rechecked my Roku device which had successfully updated to OS 14.5 previously, by performing a manual update today and did not see a newer update error.
I think what's happened is that you cleared the cache which fixes your immediate issue in which the Roku errors out and shows that blank wallpaper screen, but you didn't do the next step of attempting to manually update to the newest 14.5 OS. By not manually updating the Roku device, after a certain amount of time, Roku will try again to push the OS 14.5 update and you'll get that error until Roku resolves this.
I have since updated my 1st post on the top of page 10 of this thread to include how to manually update the Roku -- this information is now at the bottom of that post. My 2nd post on page 10 has more of a step-by-step approach which you may find more user-friendly as this addressed the prior poster who had performed a factory rest and apparently the issue returned on that person's Roku TV.
I don't know if these steps will work on all Roku devices, so another option is when that update screen pops up, to just leave it alone, and see -- if after a few minutes, it begins to automatically update your Roku as that may also resolve this issue since a couple Roku Express devices of the same model didn't have this error when they auto-updated and restarted themselves. If this doesn't work, another option you can try is when that update-screen appears, to turn off the TV which puts the Roku into sleep mode, and come back to it after an hour or so to see if it automatically has updated to OS 14.5. You can see what OS you're on by going to the manual update screen.
Update:
Today (4/24/25) my Roku Ultra 4660RW and my Roku 3 have updated to the newest OS 14.5.4 without any issues.
HELP! I don’t know what to do. It says it’s connected the. Goes to a software update and said error code 004. I’ve tried changing from beta server to release, I’ve factory reset my tv. Can’t get in contact with a human to speak with. HELPPP
Could this be related to why certain apps won’t open saying that there’s not enough space I delete apps I didn’t use and still not able to open those other apps.
First it started having me delete apps saying there wasn’t enough memory, and now it won’t let me update the software. 50in Roku Onn TV. Anyone else?
Having the same issues, I tried updating my TV and I also deleted apps cause it said my memory was full but nothing works. Let me know if you have any updates.
