connecting to Phillips TV

I have an older Phillips TV.  It does have a port for HDMI cable, but nothing happens when I connect my Roku Express to the tv.  I just get a black screen.  How do I get it to recognize the Roku?

Re: connecting to Phillips TV

Does anything else work through that port on the TV?

Is this a standard HDMI port, or might it be a .

(Oops, posted prematurely.  Continuing ...)

... or might it be an MHL port (physically looks like a standard HDMI port but also passes power to a linked device through the port)?  Some TV's in the early 2000's had MHL ports but they never caught on and they are found on few, if any, sets of recent years.

If a standard HDMI device is plugged into an MHL port it will not be able to draw its power through the port but will have to be powered separately.  I have not been able to find a definitive answer re whether a standard HDMI device will function in an MHL port.

If you look up the Philips model number on the 'net you should be able to find whether it has an MHL port or a standard HDMI.  Or the port itself may well be labeled as HDMI or MHL.
