Turn TV and Ultra off and on?

Jump to solution

How to turn the TV and Ultra off and on ? Just use the red button on the remote? Also, Ultra doesn't turn off immediately using the red button on the remote? Is that normal for a delay prior to going off? Ultra batteries do not last very long before they are drained out. Is this normal?

 Seems like a simple question, but a clarification would be appreciated.  Thank you. [personal information]

Separate Roku devices, like Ultras, do not turn off, they are on whenever plugged into a live power source.  This avoids Roku startup delays and permits them to check for and download updates in idle hours.  When not actively streaming, power consumption is very low.

With a point-anywhere remote that has power and volume buttons, as comes with the Ultra, these buttons work the TV only.

It's good practice to get in the habit of returning the Roku to the Roku home page when done viewing to prevent it from streaming unwatched and wasting bandwidth.

My understanding is it isn't best practice to power the Roku sticks from a TV USB port for similar reasons, always use the supplied USB power supply.

(Assuming the TV powers down the USB port when when on standby or off, most do.)

@Ddx123

Just to clarify and expand, the Ultra and other Roku devices do go into a "sleep/standby" mode, so the delay you are seeing is normal (blue light on unit will go out after a brief period once you stop streaming.) .  As @makaiguy mentioned, the Home Button must be pressed to stop the active streaming so this sleep period can initiate.

Regarding the batteries in the Remote...  If you are not using it for Private Listening (headphones connected/ear buds) and it is dying early, then you may have defective remote. (remote may be failing to go into sleep mode). Should get at least a couple months if not longer with regular use of remote has been my experience.  Can try using the official Mobile Roku Remote App available in the Play/Apple stores if you prefer to use a mobile device (phone/tablet) as a remote.  Much better for Private Listening as well as can connect via Bluetooth and the phone is rechargeable.
