Roku 3: Added a 32GB micro SD card, but not noticing a speed increase

I've had a Roku 3 for a few years now and I kept seeing that message pop up that said I should add a micro sd card to avoid channel reloading and (I'm assuming) speed things up.

So I picked up a SanDisk 32GB Micro SD. I popped it in, it accepted it, but I didn't notice a huge difference in the loading speeds. If anything, I think some of them like YouTube and Netflix take a little longer.

Re: Roku 3: Added a 32GB micro SD card, but not noticing a speed increase

A Roku will only utilize about 2 GB from a microSD card. Putting in anything larger is a waste.

Putting in one that large might cause issues. You may be experiencing problems on account of that, or it may be handling it just fine.

The only thing it will do is to increase the onboard channel (app) storage by 2 GB. If your apps fall within that limit, then they will all be stored. If your apps take up more than the new onboard storage, they'll still swap out, just less often.

I also have a 4GB one ... so you're saying that using the 4GB will make it faster than a 32GB ?

No. Nor am I saying it won't. I'm saying it won't use more than 2 GB regardless of what size you put in.

I am saying that sometimes the device won't work at all if a very large card is used.

I am saying that if the Roku device has to spend extra resources to manage a card that is larger than it expects that it could potentially slow it down, depending on how much extra resources were diverted to manage this, keeping in mind that older devices would be more susceptible to this. (For example, a Roku 3, top of the line at its time of release, has ¼ the on-board RAM and much slower CPU than a current Roku Ultra, top of the line currently.)

I am saying there's no advantage of any kind whatsoever to using a card larger than 2 GB, and that a detriment could occur the larger the device and larger the non-used portion.

Re: Roku 3: Added a 32GB micro SD card, but not noticing a speed increase

I switched to the 4GB micro SD card and I wouldn't say the increase in speed was huge, but it's a little bit better. Who knows, maybe it's the fact that my Roku 3 is old and is just slowing down? (I thought the micro SD card would be a good way to extend its lifespan, obviously it would be nice to put off having to replace it.

Before I retired my Roku 3 I used to use an SD card.  I'd only get a few weeks out of it before it apparently would get corrupted somehow and cause a problem when booting up or restarting - the Roku would freeze up on the startup screen with the bouncing ROKU letters.  Removing the card would allow it to start up normally.  After reformatting the card on a PC, I could put it back into the Roku 3, the Roku would reformat the card again, and it would work okay for a while... 'til the next time.  On my third or fourth cycle of this, I decided the meager gains from using the card weren't worth the hassle.  I hope your experience will be better.

Re: Roku 3: Added a 32GB micro SD card, but not noticing a speed increase

First, I think the Roku 3 may have been the most rock solid, reliable device Roku ever made. That's not a slap at other Roku devices, but rather high praise for the Roku 3.

Next, I always ran a microSD card in all of my Roku 3 devices, and had good performance. Once, one of them had an issue, and reformatting it solved it. Other than that, my experience was good. So, there has been a wide range of results regarding that, but overall positive.

If you were to upgrade to a Roku Ultra, you will notice a difference, but not a tremendous difference. Enough to notice, and not much more. I'd ride that Roku 3 until it just gave out. Unless there is some new feature it doesn't have that you can't live without.

Re: Roku 3: Added a 32GB micro SD card, but not noticing a speed increase

Yeah, I bought the Roku 3 because a lot of the reviews were saying it was the best of the bunch, performance-wise, and it hasn't disappointed (and like I said, it's current state of things isn't horrible, just seems like it could be better, so that's why I explored the micro SD option since they're pretty cheap).
