I'm vetting a message that I didn't confirm the new selection so the last display type is being used. When I click ok it takes me back to choose 720p or 1080p. I'm confused and frustrated.

Have you tried factory resetting your device and trying to set the device up again to see if that resolves your issue?

When you change the Display type to a new setting it runs you through a several screens.
