@Sande1

Thanks for the inquiry.

Roku does not charge a monthly service subscription using a Roku device or Roku TV. There is also not a charge for creating a Roku account.

However, you may be charged a monthly subscription for services, channels, or partner content available with Premium Subscriptions.

For more information about charges when using a Roku device, visit our Support page here: Will I be charged a monthly subscription or rental fees?

Thanks,
Danny

To add: Be VERY careful when setting up your Roku account and linking your TV or device. There are many scam sites that rig search engines to point to them, and you end up with a company that charges a ton of money to 'help' you. If you end up with some message saying to call a number, YOU HAVE BEEN HACKED! Do a factory refresh on the device and try again using the info below.

Always start at this link:

https://www.roku.com/

Use it to create your account, and then to link/Activate your Roku to that account.

So, in other words..if I Just use the Roku attached to my tv and just use it for watching regular tv... will I be billed or charged for any of that?  Not special TV or HBO max, etc ?

It depends on the channel. There are many free ones, but with commercials. Most of the broadcast/cable networks require a cable or similar subscription. The CW is a rare exception, but not live. Comet has free linear streaming.

Hi @Insider-123,

Thanks for posting in the Roku Community!

Your Roku device is just a one-time payment upon purchasing the device. You will never be charged to create a Roku account. We recommend creating a PIN to guard against any unwanted charges. In addition, updating your payment method will not result in charges to your account unless you have taken additional steps such as signing up for a subscription.

If you don't recognize a charge on your Roku account, learn what to do with an unknown charge.

  • Note:
    • There is never a charge to create a Roku account.
    • There is never a charge to activate a Roku device.
    • Roku does not charge for customer support.

Hope you'll find this info useful. Let us know in case you've still got any questions.

Best regards,
Mary
