I am having trouble getting the roku to fit to out tv screen it has about 6 inches on either side of the picture

Do the Roku home and menu pages fill the screen?
If so, is this on everything you watch or just on some old content that was not created in wide screen?

No the home menu does not fit the screen. Nothing does

See if you TV has a setting for picture size or zoom.

We tried that and it just makes the picture distorted ( cuts off screen makes the picture too big

What Roku model and number is it?  If you can see enough of the home screen, menu path Settings > System > About will give you this information.

What is the make and model of the TV?

What port(s) on the TV is the Roku connected to?
